Clare Portman & Jo Honey

  • The Fire Station cafe The New Cut Chatham ME46AD (map)

Clare began teaching herself to play the piano at the age of five, and progressed to song writing only two years later. Thus began a musical adventure that would take her to Dartington College to successfully study a degree in music, and then to our capital to make her lyrical fortune.

Her first band, ‘Big Girl’s Blouse’, released the ‘No Frills’ EP in 2006 and introduced the South East London unsigned scene to Clare’s poignant lyrics and powerful yet elegant vocal style.

As a member of JD and the Longfellows, Clare demonstrated the expanse of her musical talent, combining her voice, guitar and keyboard skills with the less common but always in demand washboard. She was able to further develop her song writing skills with the group, and their first album, ‘Confessions’ (2006) was one of Radio Rebel Gael’s top ten albums of the year. Two years later ‘Happy Hour Again’ (2008) made it into the top three of Shite n Onions’ top albums.

Now striking out on her own, Clare’s beautiful debut single ‘All Yours Now’ is a classic story of the realisation that so often accompanies regret. It will be followed by a host of new recordings of songs that she has recently been playing solo at the Fox & Firkin in Lewisham and other South East London venues, and a new band will be providing them with the accompaniment they deserve.
